Bull wrestling
Contests in which two bulls push head to head until one gives way, held in Japan, Turkey, Oman and elsewhere.
Also: togyu, boğa güreşi, bull-butting
Bull wrestling sets two bulls against each other to push horn to horn, and the winner is the one that holds its ground when the other turns away. It differs from bullfighting, since no person fights the bull. In Japan it is called togyu and is held on Okinawa, Tokunoshima and the Oki Islands and at Uwajima, among other places. In Turkey, boğa güreşi is the highlight of the Kafkasör festival near Artvin; in Oman, bull-butting is held on Fridays along the Batinah coast; and the Luhya of western Kenya hold bull fights too. Owners raise their bulls with great care, and contests are often tied to festivals.
