How complete is EveryCow?
Nobody has a full list of the world's cattle breeds. The FAO's global databank counts well over a thousand, many breeds have a dozen names, and many village populations were never written down. So EveryCow shows its working.
Where the list comes from
Every item that Wikidata files as a cattle breed and that has an English Wikipedia article; every article in Wikipedia's cattle breed categories, by country of origin; the breeds linked from Wikipedia's list of cattle breeds; and our own list of the breeds each region is known for, so that small native breeds are not crowded out by the global ones.
Where things stand today
| Group | Published | Waiting to be written | Waiting for review | Judged not a breed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Our own list of breeds, from the products, days and places | 129 | 246 | 41 | 2 |
| Cattle breeds, as Wikidata and Wikipedia file them | 0 | 25 | 0 | 0 |
| Other cattle subjects (not queued) | 0 | 11 | 0 | 0 |
| Total | 129 | 282 | 41 | 2 |
Country overviews written: 35 of 126. Photos: 122 of 129 breeds have a free-licence photo; the rest show a drawing until one is found. Also written by hand: 67 products, 108 cattle towns, fairs and pastures, 63 days and 193 concepts.
New pages are written every day, best documented first. Wikidata and Wikipedia are re-read every week for breeds added since.
