Cattle raiding
The taking of cattle by force from another group, long a part of herding life in many regions.
Also: cattle rustling, reiving
Where wealth is held in cattle, taking cattle has often been a way to gain wealth, settle feuds or gather bride wealth. Cattle raids are described in early Irish tales, in the Vedic hymns, where one word for battle meant a search for cows, and among the border reivers of Scotland and England. In parts of East Africa, such as South Sudan, northern Kenya and the Karamoja region of Uganda, raiding between herding communities has a long history; the spread of firearms has made it far more deadly, and governments and community leaders work on peace agreements and disarmament. In ranching countries the theft of cattle is called rustling.
