Europa and the bull
The Phoenician princess carried across the sea to Crete by Zeus in the form of a white bull.
Also: Europa, Abduction of Europa
In Greek myth Zeus fell in love with Europa, a Phoenician princess playing by the shore, and took the form of a gentle white bull. When she climbed on his back he swam out to sea and carried her to Crete, where she became the mother of Minos and his brothers. The continent of Europe is traditionally said to take its name from her, though the origin of the word is uncertain. The scene of Europa on the bull appears on Greek vases, Roman mosaics, paintings by Titian and many others, and on the Greek two-euro coin. Zeus's bull is one of the stories told for the constellation Taurus.
