Kamadhenu
The divine wish-granting cow of Hindu tradition, mother of all cattle.
Also: Surabhi, Nandini, wish-fulfilling cow
Kamadhenu, the cow of plenty, is a divine cow in Hindu texts who can grant any wish. In the Mahabharata and the Puranas she rises from the churning of the ocean of milk, the Samudra Manthan, and is given to the sages; elsewhere, as Surabhi, she is called the mother of all cattle. Her daughter Nandini lives with the sage Vasishtha, and the story of King Vishvamitra's attempt to take her by force is a well-known episode. In later art Kamadhenu is shown as a white cow with a woman's face, a peacock's tail and wings, with gods drawn inside her body. She is a central image behind the reverence of the cow as Gau Mata.
