Mastitis
Inflammation of the udder, usually caused by bacterial infection, the commonest disease of dairy cows.
Also: udder infection, thanela
Mastitis is inflammation of one or more quarters of the udder, nearly always due to bacteria that enter through the teat canal. In clinical cases the quarter may be hot, swollen and hard, and the milk shows clots or watery changes; in subclinical cases nothing is visible, but the milk's somatic cell count rises and yield falls. It is the most common and costly disease of dairy herds worldwide. Prevention rests on clean, dry bedding, hygienic milking, well-maintained milking machines and care of cows at drying off. In Hindi it is known as thanela.
