The Hawaiian cowboy, whose tradition began with Mexican vaqueros in the 1830s.

Cattle reached Hawaii in 1793 as a gift from the British captain George Vancouver to King Kamehameha I, and were protected by royal decree until they ran wild in great numbers. In 1832 King Kamehameha III brought vaqueros from Mexican California to teach Hawaiians to handle them, and the word paniolo is thought to come from español. Paniolo worked ranches on the island of Hawaiʻi and elsewhere, and developed their own style of roping and saddlery, flower lei on their hats and slack-key guitar music. In 1908 the paniolo Ikua Purdy won the world steer roping championship at Cheyenne, Wyoming.
