Pasture
Land with grass and other plants grazed by livestock.
Also: grazing, grassland, meadow
Pasture is land kept under grass, clover and other plants for animals to graze. Permanent pasture stays in grass for many years; temporary leys are sown for a few years in rotation with crops. Grazing cattle shape pastures by eating, trampling and dunging, and many meadows full of wild flowers depend on them. In the tropics pasture may be natural savanna or planted grasses such as brachiaria; in the mountains it is the summer alpage. Pasture differs from a meadow cut for hay, though many fields are both, cut once and then grazed. Common grazing land shared by a village is widespread in India and elsewhere.
