Stockman
A person who works with livestock; in Australia, a skilled cattle hand on a station.
Also: stockwoman, stockperson, ringer, jackaroo, jillaroo
A stockman, stockwoman or stockperson looks after livestock, and in Australia the word means especially a mounted cattle worker on a station. Ringers, jackaroos and jillaroos are other Australian names, the last two often for trainees learning station work. Aboriginal stockmen and women did much of the cattle work across northern Australia for over a century, often for little or no wages until equal pay was granted in the late 1960s; the Wave Hill walk-off of 1966 by Gurindji workers became a landmark in the land rights movement. The Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame in Longreach, Queensland, records station life.
