Stockyard
A set of fenced pens where cattle are held for sorting, sale or shipping.
Also: saleyard, cattle yards, corral
Stockyards are pens and lanes built to hold, sort and load cattle. Every ranch and station has its own yards, and towns on railways once had large public stockyards where animals were sold and shipped. Chicago's Union Stock Yards, opened in 1865 and closed in 1971, were for many years the largest in the world, and Fort Worth, Kansas City and Omaha had others. In Australia and Britain, public saleyards and livestock markets, where cattle are sold by auction, remain common. Good yard design, with curved races and solid sides, uses cattle's natural habits to move them calmly.
