Year of the Ox
The second year in the twelve-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac, associated with diligence and steadiness.
Also: Ox year, niu
The Ox is the second of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac, following the Rat. A popular story tells that the Ox was leading the race to the Jade Emperor until the Rat rode on its back and jumped ahead at the finish. People born in Ox years are said in folk tradition to be hard-working, patient and dependable. The most recent Ox year began in February 2021, and the next begins in 2033. In old China the start of spring was marked by beating a clay spring ox, a rite to urge on the farming year. The ox also has a place in the Korean and Japanese zodiacs.
