Cattle at Kafkasör bull wrestling

Each June the Kafkasör plateau above the town of Artvin holds a culture and arts festival whose main event is boğa güreşi, bull wrestling. Two bulls of similar weight are brought face to face and push horn to horn until one turns and leaves the field; it is a contest between the animals, with no matador and no killing. Bulls are raised for it by families of the surrounding villages, and the winners earn their owners great prestige. The festival also brings music, dancing, food stalls and the gathering of people from the high pastures, the yayla, where cattle spend the summer.
