Breeds of Ambalavao zebu market

A highland town in southern Madagascar whose weekly zebu market is the largest on the island.

Zebu

Best time: April to November, the dry season.

Ambalavao is a small town in the southern highlands of Madagascar, on the road between Fianarantsoa and the dry south. Each week, herders walk zebu cattle in from far away, often for days, to the large market on the edge of town, the biggest zebu market on the island. Buyers come from across Madagascar, and the cattle are then driven on to towns and farms.

Zebu in Madagascar

Madagascar's cattle are almost all zebu, humped and long-horned, and they matter far beyond farming. Zebu are a measure of wealth and status, are given at marriages, and are offered at important ceremonies. In the south, zebu horns are set on family tombs. In the Betsileo highlands, young men test their courage in savika, a form of zebu wrestling.

The market

The market is held on Wednesdays and Thursdays, with hundreds of animals changing hands. Herders from the south, many of them Bara, arrive with their herds on foot. Cattle theft has long been a problem in rural Madagascar, and each animal is registered and checked when sold. The town itself is also known for its handmade paper.
