Breeds of Barroso

A highland of northern Portugal where village bulls with huge horns meet in the chega de bois, and old communal farming survives.

Best time: May to September, the season of the chegas.

Barroso is a high, granite region in the north of Portugal, around Montalegre and Boticas, on the edge of the Peneda-Gerês National Park. Villages here still farm in common: shared ovens, mills and pastures, and sometimes a shared village bull. The native cattle, the Barrosã, are red-brown with enormous lyre-shaped horns. The Barroso farming system was recognised by the Food and Agriculture Organization as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System in 2018.

The Barrosã

Barrosã cattle are medium-sized, chestnut, with very long horns curving upwards. They are hardy, thrive on mountain pasture and were draught animals before they became beef cattle. Veal and beef from Barrosã cattle carry a protected designation. Neighbouring regions have their own breeds, the Maronesa of the Serra do Marão and the Cachena of the Peneda hills.

The chega de bois

In the chega de bois, two bulls, often belonging to rival villages, are brought together to push against each other head to head until one gives way. The contests are part of village festivals and draw large crowds. The winning bull brings pride to its village. The bulls are rarely badly hurt, though the events have their critics.

A trail idea for Barroso

  1. Montalegre The town and its castle on the plateau.
  2. Pitões das Júnias A village with a ruined monastery and waterfall.
  3. Peneda-Gerês National Park Mountains where native cattle graze freely.
