Bor is a town on the White Nile in Jonglei, in the land of the Dinka Bor. As the dry season sets in, Dinka families move their herds from villages to cattle camps on the toic, the grasslands by the river and the great swamps of the Sudd. In the camps, young people live with the cattle for months, tending fires of dung whose smoke keeps insects away.

Cattle and identity

For the Dinka, cattle are at the heart of social life. Young men are given a favourite ox, whose colour pattern gives them a name, and they shape its horns and compose songs for it. Marriages are sealed by the transfer of cattle between families, and herds are counted and remembered across generations. Ash from dung fires is rubbed on the skin as protection from insects.

Floods, conflict and herds

Life in Jonglei has been shaped by floods, which in recent years have covered huge areas, and by conflict and cattle raiding. Herds and people have been displaced many times. The cattle are long-horned sanga, related to the Nilotic cattle kept by the Nuer and other neighbours.
