Chillingham Park, beside Chillingham Castle in Northumberland, holds one of the most unusual herds of cattle in the world. The Chillingham cattle are white with red ears and have lived in the park, enclosed and largely left alone, for at least several centuries. They are never handled, fed only hay in hard winters, and have bred among themselves for so long that they are almost genetically identical.

The herd

The herd lives as wild animals, with a dominant bull, and cows that calve alone in the bracken and hide their calves. No outside cattle have joined it in recorded history. In the hard winter of 1947 the herd fell to just thirteen animals, then slowly recovered. A small reserve herd is kept in Scotland as insurance against disease. The foot-and-mouth outbreak of 2001 came close to the park but did not reach it.

Visiting

The cattle are owned by a charitable association, and visitors may see them only on guided walks with the warden, at a safe distance. The park is pasture and woodland, with views to the Cheviot hills. The cattle are a living link to the white park cattle that once roamed several English estates.
