Deoni is a small town in Latur district, in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra close to the Karnataka border. The Deoni breed of cattle, black and white or spotted, is found here and in neighbouring Bidar. It is a dual-purpose animal, and its build and long ears show its kinship with the Gir of Gujarat.
The Deoni breed
Deoni cattle are medium to large, with a broad forehead, long drooping ears and short curved horns. Their coats come in three patterns: clear white, white with black spots, and largely black. The bullocks work the black-soil fields of the Deccan, and the cows give a useful amount of milk. The breed is thought to have come from Gir cattle crossed with local stock over the centuries.
Marathwada farming
This is dry black-cotton soil country, farmed for sorghum, pulses, soybean and sugarcane. Bullocks are still used on smaller farms, and village markets trade cattle each week. Nearby Kandhar in Nanded district is home to another local breed, the Red Kandhari. Government farms and breeders' groups in Maharashtra and Karnataka keep Deoni herds.
