Breeds of Diafarabé and the cattle crossing

A village on the Niger in Mali where Fulani herders swim their cattle across the river each year in a festival of return.

Best time: Usually between November and January, as set by the elders.

Diafarabé sits on the Niger river in the Inner Niger Delta, a vast floodplain in central Mali. Each year, after months grazing on the dry lands of the Sahel, Fulani herders bring their cattle back to the delta's rich floodplain pastures. At Diafarabé the herds swim across the river in a great crossing, the Yaaral, a festival of reunion for families and herders.

The crossing

The date of the crossing is set by elders according to the water level and the state of the pastures, usually toward the end of the year. Herders, many of whom have been away for months, return in their finest clothes. They drive their cattle into the river and swim with them across, while crowds watch from the banks. The herds are then judged, and the herders who return with the fattest cattle are honoured.

A recognised tradition

The cattle crossings of the Inner Niger Delta, the Yaaral and the Degal, were recognised by UNESCO in 2005 and inscribed on its list of intangible cultural heritage. The delta's floodplain grasses, especially the bourgou, sustain huge herds in the dry season. Insecurity in central Mali has disrupted the crossings in some recent years.
