Best time: May to October.

Istria is a peninsula on the northern Adriatic, mostly in Croatia, with hill towns, olive groves and red soil. Its native cattle, the Boškarin, are grey with great lyre-shaped horns, a Podolian type related to the grey cattle of Hungary and Italy. For centuries Boškarin oxen ploughed Istrian fields and pulled carts and timber.

The Boškarin

Boškarin oxen were prized for strength and endurance, and good pairs were a farmer's pride. As machines replaced them in the twentieth century, numbers fell to a few hundred. In the 1990s, a conservation programme began, supported by the regional government, and the breed has since recovered. It is now raised for beef, and the oxen appear at local fairs and shows.

Inland Istria

Pazin, at the centre of the peninsula, sits above a deep gorge with a castle on its edge. The hill towns of inland Istria, such as Motovun and Grožnjan, look over valleys where Boškarin cattle graze. Fairs and festivals in the region show off the oxen in harness.
