Breeds of Jersey

The Channel Island whose small fawn cows, kept pure by a ban on cattle imports since 1789, are now milked around the world.

Jersey cattle

Best time: May to September, the season of the island's cattle shows.

Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands, a small green island off the coast of Normandy. Its cattle, small, fawn and gentle-eyed, with dark muzzles ringed in pale hair, have been bred here in isolation for more than two centuries. In 1789 the island banned the import of live cattle to protect its breed, and from Jersey the cows went out to dairies on every continent.

The Jersey cow

Jersey cattle are among the smallest dairy breeds. They are fawn to dark brown, with large eyes and a fine head. Their milk is high in butterfat and protein, rich and yellow, which made them favourites for butter and cream. The island's agricultural society, founded in 1833, began a herd book in 1866. Since 2008 the island has allowed imported semen, while the ban on live cattle remains.

Island farming

Jersey cows are often tethered in small fields and moved along the grass several times a day, a practice that suits the island's small, hedged plots. The island's dairy is run by its farmers, and milk, butter and ice cream are sold under the island's name. Agricultural shows in spring and summer bring the best cows to be judged.
