Breeds of Namche Bazaar and the Khumbu

The Sherpa trading village below Everest, where yaks and dzo carry loads and a weekly market fills on Saturdays.

Breeds of this place

YakDzo

Best time: October to November and March to May, the trekking seasons.

Namche Bazaar is a horseshoe of lodges and houses at about 3,400 metres in the Khumbu, the Sherpa homeland south of Everest. It has long been a trading post between Tibet and the lowlands. Yaks and the yak and cattle crosses called dzo carry loads on the trails, and herders take their animals to high summer pastures each year.

Namche Bazaar village located at 3,440 metres (11,286 ft) above the sea level in Khumbu region , northeastern Nepal . The Kongde Ri peak with its 6,187 m (20,299 ft) can be seen in the background.

Yaks and dzo

Yaks do best above about 3,000 metres, where the air is thin and cold. Lower down, Sherpa families use the zopkyo, the male yak and cattle cross, which is calmer and copes with warmer valleys. Both carry supplies for villages and trekking groups. Their milk becomes butter and cheese, and their dung, dried on walls, is burned as fuel.

Summer pastures and the market

In summer, herds move up to grazing places at settlements such as Dingboche and Pheriche, where stone-walled fields protect hay for winter. The Saturday market at Namche brings traders up from the lower valleys with rice, vegetables and goods, and sometimes from Tibet. Sagarmatha National Park, covering the Khumbu, is a World Heritage Site.
