Aurochs

Best time: April to June and September to October.

Knossos, just south of Heraklion in Crete, was the largest palace of the Minoan civilisation, which flourished more than 3,500 years ago. Bulls appear everywhere in its art: in frescoes, on vases, as stone heads used as ritual vessels, and in the sacred horns that crowned its walls. Later Greek myth set the story of the Minotaur, half man and half bull, in a labyrinth here.

Bull-leaping

The best known fresco from Knossos shows young athletes vaulting over a charging bull, one grasping its horns, one in mid-leap over its back, one landing behind. Scholars still debate how the feat was performed and what it meant. The bulls in the art are large, with long horns, closer to the wild aurochs than to modern cattle.

The palace and the museum

The palace was excavated by Arthur Evans from 1900, and parts were reconstructed in concrete, which has been debated ever since. The original frescoes and the bull's-head rhyton are in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, one of the great museums of the ancient world.
