The Maasai Mara is open savanna in south-west Kenya, joined to Tanzania's Serengeti. It is famed for wildlife, but it is also Maasai land, where cattle have been central to life for centuries. Around the national reserve, Maasai families graze their herds on community land and conservancies, some of which plan grazing alongside wildlife tourism.

Cattle in Maasai life

Among the Maasai, cattle are wealth, food and social bond. Milk is a main food, drunk fresh or soured in gourds. Cattle are given at marriages and passed between friends and kin. Herds are kept at night inside thorn-fenced homesteads, the enkang, safe from lions and hyenas. Boys learn herding early and young men once protected the herds as warriors.

Herds and wildlife

Traditional Maasai cattle are small East African zebu, hardy and drought-tolerant. Many families now cross them with Sahiwal and Boran bulls for more milk and meat. In the conservancies around the reserve, landowners lease land for tourism and agree when and where cattle may graze. Drought and changing land use make balancing herds and wildlife an ongoing debate.
