Breeds of Mbarara and Ankole

The heart of the old kingdom of Ankole, home of the long-horned Ankole cattle and the Bahima herders who bred them.

Mbarara is the main city of western Uganda, in rolling grassland that was once the kingdom of Nkore, or Ankole. Its herders, the Bahima, are known for the Ankole cattle, with their enormous, upward-curving horns. Cattle were at the centre of life here: wealth, marriage and the language of praise and poetry.

The Ankole cow

Ankole cattle are sanga, a blend of humpless and humped cattle, usually red-brown, with horns that can grow very long and thick. They are hardy and can live on rough grazing with little water. Cows are often given names, and herders recite praises to their best animals. The long-horned Inyambo type was especially prized in royal herds.

Milk and change

Mbarara is now one of Uganda's main dairy areas. Many herders have crossed their Ankole cows with Holstein Friesian bulls to raise milk yields, and pure Ankole herds have become fewer. Research stations and some families keep the old breed. Lake Mburo National Park, east of the city, lies in grassland where herders and wildlife share the land.
