Breeds of Nyanza and the royal Inyambo

The old royal capital of Rwanda, where a palace museum keeps a herd of long-horned Inyambo cattle that are sung to by their keepers.

Breeds of this place

Ankole

Best time: June to September, the long dry season.

Nyanza was the seat of Rwanda's kings in the early twentieth century. The reconstructed royal palace and the later palace of the 1930s now form a museum, and beside them grazes a herd of Inyambo, the long-horned cattle once kept in the royal herds. Their keepers still sing praise poems to them, a tradition tied to Rwandan court culture.

The Inyambo

Inyambo are a type of Ankole cattle, chosen for long, lyre-shaped horns and a calm bearing. In the past they were trained to walk in procession and were shown at ceremonies. Herders composed praise poetry, called amazina y'inka, about them. Cattle in Rwanda have long been bound to friendship and marriage, and a gift of a cow is still a strong sign of respect.

One cow per family

In 2006 Rwanda began a national programme, Girinka, which gives a cow to poor families, who pass on the first female calf to a neighbour. It draws on the old custom of giving cattle to seal ties between families. The programme has also brought crossbred dairy cows to many households.
