Best time: February and October, for the sales; May to September for the islands.

Oban is a harbour town on the west coast of Scotland, gateway to the islands of the Hebrides. Each spring and autumn, Highland cattle breeders bring their animals to the sales here, the main gatherings of the breed. Highland cattle, long-horned and shaggy, red, black, yellow, dun or white, are kept in groups called folds, and are one of the hardiest cattle breeds in the world.

Highland cattle

Highland cattle come from the mountains and islands of the west of Scotland, where they lived outdoors all year on poor grazing. Their long double coat sheds rain and snow, and their long horns help them forage. The Highland Cattle Society was founded in 1884. The breed has been exported widely and is kept for beef, conservation grazing and as a familiar sight in Scottish fields.

The Luing

On the island of Luing, south of Oban, the Cadzow brothers began crossing Beef Shorthorn and Highland cattle in 1947. The result, the Luing, combined the hardiness of the Highland with the size of the Shorthorn. It was recognised as a breed in 1965 and is now kept on hill farms across Scotland.
