Ōmi is the old name of Shiga Prefecture, the land around Lake Biwa. In the Edo period, when eating meat was uncommon in Japan, the Hikone domain here sent beef pickled in miso to the shogun's court, presented as a nourishing tonic. Ōmi beef is often counted with Kobe and Matsusaka as one of Japan's three great beef traditions.

Ōmi beef

Ōmi beef comes from Japanese Black cattle raised in Shiga for the longest part of their lives. Farms around the lake raise them on rice straw and grain. In the Meiji era, when beef eating grew, cattle from Ōmi were walked and later shipped to Tokyo, and the name became widely known. Miso-pickled beef is still made as a local speciality.

Canals and merchants

Ōmihachiman grew as a castle and merchant town, and its canal, lined with storehouses and willow trees, is now a quiet place to walk. Ōmi merchants were famous across Japan for trading far from home. Hikone, with its original castle, lies a short way up the lake.
