Best time: October to November, for spring and the Fiesta de la Tradición.

The Pampas are among the world's great grasslands, flat and fertile, stretching west and south from Buenos Aires. Spanish cattle ran wild here in colonial times, and gauchos, the horsemen of the plains, lived by hunting and herding them. British breeds arrived in the nineteenth century, and Argentina became one of the world's great beef exporters.

From wild herds to estancias

In the eighteenth century, wild cattle were hunted for their hides. With fences, railways and refrigerated ships in the late nineteenth century, large estates, the estancias, turned to beef for export. Shorthorn arrived in 1826, Hereford in the 1860s and Aberdeen Angus in 1879, and black Angus became the most common breed on the Pampas. In 2022 Buenos Aires' historic livestock market moved from Liniers, in the city, to Cañuelas, on the edge of the plains.

The gaucho town

San Antonio de Areco, north-west of Buenos Aires, is known for its gaucho traditions, silversmiths and leather workers. Each November it holds the Fiesta de la Tradición around Argentina's Day of Tradition, 10 November, with horsemanship displays, music and parades. The town's museum is dedicated to Don Segundo Sombra, the gaucho novel set in the area.
