Paynes Prairie is a wide basin of marsh and wet grassland south of Gainesville. In the seventeenth century, it was the site of La Chua, one of the largest Spanish cattle ranches in Florida. Today it is a state preserve, Florida's first, and it keeps small herds of Florida Cracker cattle and Cracker horses to recall the region's long ranching history.

Florida Cracker cattle

Florida Cracker cattle descend from the cattle Spanish settlers brought to Florida from the sixteenth century. They are small, hardy and heat-tolerant, adapted to Florida's heat, insects and poor forage, and come in many colours, often with long horns. Their name is said to come from the crack of the cowmen's whips. As ranchers turned to larger breeds in the twentieth century, the Crackers nearly vanished, and the state now treats them as a heritage breed.

The prairie

The basin floods and dries in cycles, and its marsh and grassland hold wading birds, alligators and many other animals. An observation tower and a boardwalk overlook the prairie, where the Cracker cattle sometimes graze.
