Best time: November, from Kartik Purnima for about a month.

Sonpur lies at the meeting of the Gandak and the Ganga, across the river from Patna. The Harihar Kshetra fair begins at Kartik Purnima and runs for about a month. Pilgrims bathe at the confluence and visit the Harihar Nath temple, sacred to both Vishnu and Shiva, while the fields outside town fill with tents, stalls and animals. It has long been called one of the largest animal fairs in Asia.

The fair and its story

The fair is tied to the legend of Gajendra Moksha, in which an elephant seized by a crocodile in the river is saved by Vishnu. Elephants were once its most famous trade, along with horses brought from far away. Cattle have always made up a large share of the animals, bought by farmers from across the Gangetic plain. The trade in elephants has largely ended under wildlife law, and the fair today is as much a festival as a market.

The cattle of the plain

The cattle sold at Sonpur come mostly from the plains of Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh. The Hariana, grey and strong, is the main draught and milk breed of the north. The Gangatiri, kept along the Ganga, is a smaller grey cow of the same family, and the Bachaur of north Bihar is a compact working bullock. Crossbred dairy cows now share the market with the old desi breeds.
