Best time: After the monsoon, from August to October, when the desert is green.

Tharparkar district lies in the south-east corner of Sindh, where the Thar desert runs up to the Rann of Kutch. Its sand hills, scrub and scattered villages support people largely through livestock. The Tharparkar cow, white or grey, is one of the hardiest dairy zebu in South Asia, kept here and across the border in the desert districts of Rajasthan and Gujarat.

The desert cow

Tharparkar cattle are medium-sized, white to grey, with lyre-shaped horns and a gentle temper. They can live on dry grasses and shrubs, walk long distances to water and still give milk, which made them valued in the desert and later in breeding programmes in drier parts of India. They are also called Thari or White Sindhi. Bullocks are used for ploughing the sandy fields after the rains.

Life in the Thar

Rain in the Thar comes in a short monsoon, and in good years the sand turns green with grass. In dry years herders move cattle, goats and camels to canal country in search of fodder, and droughts have been hard on both people and animals. Mithi is the district town, and Nagarparkar in the south, by the pink granite Karoonjhar hills, holds old Jain temples.

  4. Village wells In the dry season, herds gather at wells at dawn and dusk.
