Vechoor is a village in Kottayam district on the shore of Vembanad Lake, in the backwater country of central Kerala. It gives its name to the Vechur cow, one of the smallest cattle breeds in the world, often under 90 centimetres at the shoulder. By the late 1980s only a handful of pure animals could be found, and a rescue began.

Saving the Vechur

In 1989 a team from Kerala Agricultural University, led by Professor Sosamma Iype, set out to find surviving Vechur cattle in village households. They gathered a small herd at the university's farm at Mannuthy in Thrissur and began a breeding programme. The breed has since grown in number and is now kept by households and conservation groups across Kerala.

A cow for a small farm

Vechur cows are light red, fawn or black, with small horns. They need little feed, resist many diseases common in the humid tropics, and give a small amount of milk that is high in fat. In a land of small plots, coconut groves and rice paddies, they suited households that could keep only one animal.
