Breed
A group of cattle with a shared ancestry and look that, mated together, pass on that type.
Also: cattle breed
A breed is a population of cattle that share a common origin and enough traits of colour, shape, size or use that they can be told apart from others, and that pass these traits on when bred within the group. Many breeds are named for the place they came from, such as the Hereford, the Gir hills or the Simme valley of the Simmental. Some are defined by a herd book and a breed society with written standards; others, especially landraces, by tradition and local knowledge. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations counts more than a thousand cattle breeds worldwide, and lists many local ones as at risk.
