Herd book
The official register of pedigree animals of a breed, recording parents, births and identity.
Also: herdbook, pedigree register, stud book
A herd book lists the registered animals of a breed, with their sires and dams, breeders and identity marks, so that a pedigree can be traced back generations. The first cattle herd book was George Coates's Herd Book of Shorthorns, published in England in 1822, and it set the pattern for herd books worldwide. Most are now kept by breed societies or national bodies. Some are closed, accepting only animals with registered parents, while others are open to grading up. In India, recognised breeds are listed by the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources at Karnal, and new breeds are added after study.
