Bullock cart races are run in many parts of rural India. In Maharashtra, bailgada sharyat events draw large crowds at village fairs, with pairs of bullocks pulling small carts over a dirt track; in Tamil Nadu, rekla races use light two-wheeled carts. Punjab's Kila Raipur rural sports festival long included bullock cart races. Owners breed and train bullocks for speed, and the races add value to native breeds such as the Khillari. Like jallikattu, these races have been through court cases over animal welfare; Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu passed laws to allow them under rules, and the Supreme Court upheld these laws in 2023.
