Bullock cart
A two-wheeled cart drawn by a pair of bullocks or oxen, long the main farm transport of South Asia.
Also: oxcart, bail gadi, carreta
The bullock cart, bail gadi in Hindi and Marathi, has carried crops, goods and families across South Asia for thousands of years; clay models of carts have been found at Harappan sites. It usually has two large wooden wheels, sometimes iron-rimmed, a long pole and a neck yoke for a pair of bullocks. Carts drawn by oxen were used across Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas. In Costa Rica, oxcarts painted in bright patterns, the carretas, became a national symbol, and the country's oxherding and oxcart traditions were recognised by UNESCO in 2005. Carts remain common in rural India, and light racing carts appear in bullock cart races.
