Cattle camp
A seasonal camp where herders and their cattle live together, especially in the dry season in South Sudan.
Also: dry-season camp
In the Nile lands of South Sudan, Dinka, Nuer and Mundari herders take their cattle in the dry season from the villages to camps near rivers and swamps, where water and grass remain. A camp may hold hundreds or thousands of cattle and many people, mostly young, who sleep on beds of ash among the animals tethered to pegs. The day follows the herd: milking in the morning, grazing out, return at evening and dung fires against flies. Camps are places of song, dance, courtship and the display of song oxen. Similar herding camps are found among the Fulani, Maasai and many other pastoral peoples.
