Mundari
A small cattle-herding people of South Sudan, known for their large long-horned cattle and smoky cattle camps.
Also: Mandari
The Mundari live in the Central Equatoria region of South Sudan, around Terekeka on the White Nile, north of Juba. They keep large long-horned cattle of the Ankole type, which are at the centre of their wealth and social life and are rarely killed. In the cattle camps herders tend the animals closely, massaging them, rubbing them with ash from burned dung to keep off insects and lighting dung fires to smoke away flies. Young men sleep among the herd and keep guard against raiders. Photographs of Mundari camps, hazy with smoke and ash in the evening light, have become widely known.
