Cowbell
A bell hung from a cow's neck so herders can hear where the animals are.
Also: Treichel, Glocke, cattle bell, ghanti
Cowbells let herders find their cattle by ear in forests, mountains and mist. Alpine herders use two kinds: the Treichel, hammered into shape from sheet metal, and the cast Glocke, often large and finely decorated, hung on an embroidered leather strap and worn for festivals rather than daily grazing. Herders learn to recognise their animals by the sound of their bells. Cowbells are also used across India, Africa and South America, made of brass, iron or wood, and in Indian villages bells and bead strings decorate cattle at festivals. The sound of the cowbell has passed into music, from Swiss folk tunes to Latin American percussion.
