Kulning

A high-pitched Scandinavian song used to call cattle and goats home from the forest pastures.

Also: kauking, lokk, herding call

Kulning is a singing technique from the summer farms of Sweden and Norway, where similar calls are known as kauking or lokk. Women, who traditionally kept the herds at the fäbod or seter, used high, ringing calls to bring cows and goats home from forest pastures, and to speak to each other across long distances. The sound carries a long way, and cattle learned to answer the call of their own herder. Kulning has a strong place in Scandinavian folk music and is still taught and performed, and it can be heard at summer farm gatherings and concerts.
