Fulani
A people spread across West and Central Africa, many of them herders who move cattle with the seasons.
Also: Fulɓe, Fula, Peul, Fulbe
The Fulani, Fulɓe in their own language and Peul in French, live across the Sahel and savanna of West and Central Africa, from Senegal to Sudan. Many are farmers or town dwellers, but the Fulani are the best-known herding people of the region, moving cattle between wet-season pastures in the north and dry-season grazing further south. They keep zebu breeds such as the White Fulani, the Red Bororo, or Mbororo, and the Sokoto Gudali. Cattle are a measure of a family's standing, and the ideals of pulaaku guide a herder's conduct. Competition for land and water with settled farmers has led to conflict in some areas, a complex and much-studied issue.
