Pulaaku
The Fulani code of conduct, combining self-control, patience, good sense and care for cattle.
Also: the Fulani way, laawol pulaaku
Pulaaku, roughly the Fulani way, is the set of values that defines a Fulani person. It is usually explained through qualities such as semteende, modesty and reserve, munyal, patience and self-control in hardship, and hakkillo, good sense and forethought. Knowing and caring for cattle is part of it, and a skilled herder who knows each animal by name and descent is respected. Pulaaku guides behaviour in public, such as restraint in showing hunger or strong feeling, and marks the Fulani off from their neighbours. Among the Wodaabe, a herding group, its ideals of beauty and bearing are celebrated at gatherings such as the Gerewol.
