Hathor
An ancient Egyptian goddess shown as a cow or as a woman with cow's horns and a sun disc.
Also: Het-Heru, cow goddess
Hathor was one of the major goddesses of ancient Egypt, a goddess of the sky, love, music, dance, motherhood and joy. She was shown as a cow, as a woman with cow's ears, or as a woman wearing a headdress of cow's horns holding a sun disc. As a heavenly cow she was thought to carry the sun and give birth to it each day, and as a mother she suckled kings. Her great temple at Dendera, mostly built in Ptolemaic and Roman times, is one of the best preserved in Egypt. Many of her features were later taken on by Isis, who also wears the horned sun disc.
