Heifer
A young female that has not yet had a calf, or in some usage has had only one.
Also: quey, bachhia
A heifer is a young female bovine that has not borne a calf. In dairy herds heifers are usually bred at around fifteen months to calve at about two years old; beef and zebu heifers are often older at first calving. After her first calf she is called a first-calf heifer or simply a cow; usage varies, and some say she remains a heifer until her second calf. A maiden heifer has never been mated, an in-calf heifer is pregnant. In Scots a heifer is a quey. The word appears in older texts too, including the red heifer of the Hebrew Bible, whose ashes were used in ritual purification.
