Cow
A grown female bovine that has had at least one calf; in everyday speech, any domestic cattle.
Also: cows, kine, gai, go
Strictly, a cow is an adult female that has given birth, as opposed to a heifer, which has not. In everyday English the word is used for cattle of any sex, as in cows in a field. Cows are kept for milk, for raising calves for meat and work, and in many places for the standing and security a herd gives. A dairy cow may work through several lactations; cows in traditional and sanctuary herds can live past twenty years. The Sanskrit word go, which can also mean light and earth, gives Gopala, Govinda and many place names in India, and gai is the everyday word for a cow in Hindi.
