Huaso
The Chilean countryman and horseman of the central valley, known for rodeo.
Also: guaso
The huaso is the rural horseman of central Chile, the counterpart of the gaucho and vaquero. On the haciendas of the central valley huasos herded cattle on horseback, and their dress of a short colourful poncho called a chamanto, a flat-brimmed hat, short boots and large spurs is worn at fiestas and on national days. The Chilean rodeo grew from the yearly round-ups of cattle: pairs of riders pin a steer against the padded wall of a crescent-shaped arena, the medialuna. Rodeo was named Chile's national sport in 1962, and the cueca dance is closely linked to huaso tradition.
