Also: llanera

Llaneros are the people of the Llanos, the vast seasonally flooded plains of the Orinoco basin shared by Venezuela and Colombia, where cattle ranching has been the main way of life since colonial times. They ride and work cattle through flood and drought, and show their skill in coleo, a contest in which a rider brings down a running steer by its tail. Llaneros fought as cavalry in the wars of independence under José Antonio Páez and Simón Bolívar. Their music, played on harp, cuatro and maracas, is widely known, and their cattle work songs were inscribed by UNESCO in 2017 as heritage in need of urgent safeguarding.
