Inyambo

The long-horned royal cattle of Rwanda, trained to walk and stand in ceremonies to song.

Long horns that sweep out sideways, as in the Texas Longhorn, which can span more than two metres tip to tip.

Also: Inyambo cattle, royal cattle of Rwanda

Inyambo are a line of Ankole cattle in Rwanda, bred for their very long, upward-curving horns and once kept by the royal court. Their herders train them from a young age to walk calmly in procession, stand in line and move to the singing and chanting of their handlers, and they are adorned with beaded fringes on the forehead. Praise poems for cattle, amazina y'inka, form part of Rwanda's oral literature. Inyambo still appear at cultural events and national ceremonies. Cattle hold a deep place in Rwandan life and language, where greetings and blessings often wish a person many cows.
