Sanga
The long-horned African cattle that blend taurine and zebu ancestry, with a small hump on the neck.
Also: sanga cattle, African long-horned cattle
Sanga is the name for a group of African cattle that carry both taurine and zebu ancestry and are found mainly in East and southern Africa. They usually have a small cervico-thoracic hump, set further forward on the neck than the zebu hump, and many have very long horns. The Ankole of Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, the Afrikaner of South Africa, the Nguni, the Tuli of Zimbabwe and the Barotse of Zambia are counted among the sanga breeds. They are valued for hardiness in heat and drought and for living on rough grazing. Many sanga herds are tied closely to the customs of the peoples who keep them, from bride wealth to song and naming.
