Judging
Placing cattle in order of merit by eye and hand against the ideal for their breed and purpose.
Also: stock judging, livestock judging
A cattle judge walks around the animals in the ring, watches them move, handles them to feel fat cover and muscle, and places them in order, often giving the reasons aloud. Dairy cattle are judged mainly on frame, dairy strength, feet and legs and udder; beef cattle on muscle, structure and finish. Judges are usually experienced breeders approved by breed societies. Stock judging is also a competition in its own right for young farmers' clubs, 4-H groups and agricultural students, who place classes and defend their choices. Good judging rewards animals that will work well, not only those that catch the eye.
